Hey! Sorry for the lack of posts recently. Things have been a bit hectic here. I am back in the blog- sphere and ready to go. I have my ‘Bright Lights Juice” and my “Light Green Refresher Juice” recipes to share. We have been having a bit of a heat wave here, I think in other countries it may be know as “Sum-mer”. It is a wonderful thing. I have been able to partake in outdoor yoga again, neighbours haven’t started throwing things out their windows at me yet!!! 😉

My view doing Yoga

My view doing Yoga

Yesterday I had my crazy colourful juice. It is filled with anti-oxidant rich wonders, including the “Chard Bright Lights” which I have named the juice after.

Bright Lights pre the juicin'

Bright Lights pre the juicin’

Bright Lights Juice

  • Three Rainbow Chard leaves and stems
  • One medium beetroot
  • Two GAINT stalks of celery (3 small)
  • One unwaxed lime
  • Four mint leaves
  • One oregano stalk with leaves
  • Four inch/ 9cms piece of cucumber
  • Piece of turmeric size of baby finger nail
  • Piece of org ginger the same size
  • Bundle of wheatgrass one inch/2.5cm in diameter
  • Optional: A double shot of water kefir

I use all organic stuff, but i am lucky to work somewhere that sells the stuff! I emphasis the organic ginger as sometimes non-organic can have been irradiated. This juice is anti-oxandiant rich. Contains anti-inflammatory goodies like turmeric and ginger. These double up as great for the digestion as is mint. Oregano has anti-bacterial properties, the kefir is filled with good bacteria! It has the obvious b vits, vitamin c, potassium and the amazing superoxide dismutase found in wheatgrass. i had an intense lime- so it was very limey, yours may not be.

Here is tonights green wonder. I call it the Light Green Refresher!

Light Green Refresher

Light Green Refresher

I made two of these. So the recipe will give you one decent sized juice. It is in the high 20sC here, about 80F. I came in from my after work stint in the sun. I did my yoga indoors tonight- I decided burning shoulders may not be good for shoulder stands! I wanted a light thirst quenching green boost- so here it is…

Light Green Refresher Juice

  • One unwaxed granny smith apple
  • One stalk of GIANT celery
  • Two inch/5cm of cucumber
  • Bundle of wheatgrass 1inch/2.5cm in diameter
  • Two inches/ 5cm of a carrot (I had nibbled the rest!)
  • 1cm/half inch piece of turmeric
  • Same of organic ginger

C’est Ca! Easy, light , sweet and refreshing and packed full of good things!

Hope you try them! Xs Aissa

I am lucky I work in a shop that sells lovely organic veggies. There is also a few wonderful organic farmer’s markets in Dublin. I am going through a phase of being struck by the beauty of fruit, veg and flowers. We have long winters here in Ireland and maybe I am just appreciating the green and growing things of summer! Perhaps my inner hippy is fighting its way up through my cynical crust. 😉

A friend shared this great link and I have been passing it on as it’s very informative.

http://www.trueactivist.com/do-you-know-what-your-favorite-foods-look-like-while-growing/

Yesterday I was at the farmer’s market and I was given this beautiful garlic flower! I had some of the little buds in a salad last night. Delicious garlic chive like taste. Intense and sweet.

Beautiful garlic flower

On friday at work I had to buy this beetroot, because it was so alive looking! Full of antioxidants and even helps lower blood pressure. It is part of the juice recipe below.

Brilliant Beetroot

Magic MIx

Magic MIx

The inspiration for this was – I have theses organic things I will juice them. A “Magic Mix Juice!”

  • One unwaxed green pear
  • One unwaxed lemon
  • One brilliant beetroot
  • One big slice of turmeric- prob the size of the top of your thumb
  • A slice of organic ginger- half the size of the turmeric*
  • Three big stalks of mint
  • Four stalks of parsley
  • Bunch of wheatgrass- 2inch in diameter
  • Optional: Two double shots of water kefir

*organic ginger as non organic can have been irradiated!!!

I put my herbs and wheatgrass into the masticating juicer first. Reason being I find leafy bits some times get stuck. The rest will push the important wheatgrass through.

For some reason this was very lemony. Think I got a intensely lemony lemon. A ristretto lemon?

Love the red tone from the beetroot, love the good bacteria from the water kefir! Xs Aissa

Sunshine special

Sunshine special

The sun was in and out here all day. I was coming home from work and paused to turn my face to it. I had the ingredients for my juice in my bag and I thought Sunshine Special! Perfect. The sun has gone in now and the clouds are massing. I will have to be happy with the glow from my juice instead.

Sunshine Special

  • One large unwaxed orange- with the skin
  • One unwaxed lemon- skin included
  • One large carrot
  • One small or half a large purple kohl rabi
  • Piece of turmeric- about the size of the top of my thumb
  • One tiny apricot
  • Slice of ginger inch x a few mm thick/ 2cm x tenth of an inch thick 😉 *
  • Sprig of oregano
  • Four mint leaves
  • Dash of organic apple cider vinegar with the mother
  • Optional: Dash of water kefir
  • Optional: Bundle of wheatgrass half inch in diameter

*esp organic ginger as non-organic is sometimes irradiated!

I don’t have oranges that often- bit acidic. When I have the want though… nothing else will satisfy. This juice is really refreshing and thirst quenching. It is packed full of vitamin c , tons of antioxidants, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and good for the digestion! Tastes lovely too. I added a shot of wheatgrass to our juices, I shared! The wheatgrass was lovely in it.

Lovely, colourful bonanza of organic goodies! Xs Aissa

soooo greeeeennnnn!!!

soooo greeeeennnnn!!!

I practiced a yin yoga routine this evening. It was what I needed. Had a bit of an odd dislocatey moment at the start, but managed to put myself back together! 🙂 It is more of a mental challenge to stay in poses for a longer time. I am such a fidgeter and my attention span is that of…. some creature with a low attention span. A butterfly? Seems insulting to butterflies. I digress. The Yin was good, really increased my flexibility.
Here is the “little juice that could” (I think that is a Thomas the tank engine reference). Felt energised after my yoga but this zapped me up another level. Nutrient packed, which has a lot to do with the wheatgrass. Alkalising, anti- inflammatory, good for the digestion and your immune system. Hopefully good for helping repair over stretched dislocatey bits too!! 😉

Power Shot

  • An inch an a half (3.5cm) bundle of wheatgrass
  • A whole unwaxed lemon
  • Three inch (7cm) piece of cucumber
  • A knub of fresh turmeric (about the size of the top of my thumb)
  • A sprig of fresh oregano
  • Six fresh mint leaves

Taste wise its a good one! The cucumber lightens and freshens that strong wheatgrass flavour. My lemon was lovely and ripe so it was sweet and sour at the same time. Turmeric floated on the background with the oregano as slightly earthy. The mint was the hero though, made it really refreshing!

Hope you try it. Xs Aissa

little bowl of fabulousness

P.S. i accidentally liked my own post! Weird that I can even do that! Don’t know how to undo it. I just thought I’d mention it incase you guys think it is a bit of an odd thing to do.

There was something especially refreshing about this juice. Might be because I had an afternoon attempting to dehydrate myself into Aissa Jerky. The peas and lemon and mint made it taste bright and sweet. Give peas a chance…? blush. Had to be said.

  • About 100g of mange-tout (approx. half a cup if you stood them up in it…)

O what a glorious few days of sun we have had. Got up into the high twenties (low 80sF). I got home from work, dropped shopping, jumped into shorts and was out the door. Sun, sun, sun sun O how I adore the big glowing ball of radiation! I practiced my yoga outdoors again, curling my toes in the warm grass. I reached up into the solid blue sky in my shoulder stand. I was extremely warm but also the heat increased my flexibility, my happiness to be in the good weather may have helped too! A lovely hour practice- including sun salutes as I mentioned in my last post- as it seemed rude not to 😉

I listened to the radio, read and just lay there for another hour and a half, as if there was nothing else I had to do. You have to take the sun when you can get it here in Ireland. You never know when the clouds will reappear.

I am still doing my healthy juice a day. I wanted something super green! I had eaten a plum and green apple while laying in the grass. I decided that was enough fruit so made a veg based one. It is CRAZY green and REALLY NOT sweet. So much so I had a beautiful ripe strawberry with it to balance it out. Now that I’m typing I’m thinking I could have diluted it… but eh!

kale and strawberry

kale and strawberry

Kale and Stawberries etc.

  • Four leaves and stalks of flat kale (cavolo nero)
  • A bunch of wheatgrass just under one inch in diameter (approx 2cm)
  • Three small carrots (equal to one large)
  • An inch long 1mm(.05inch) thick piece of organic ginger*
  • Half that amount of turmeric root
  • A couple of mint leaves
  • Optional: a quarter teaspoon of magnesium to balance the oxalic acid in the kale
  • Two ripe strawberries- to eat with the juice
  • I recommend diluting it with some water or water kefir

*organic as sometimes non-organic can have been irradiated

Green Grass Juice- pre the juicing!

Green Grass Juice- pre the juicing!

Summer continues to be summer here in Ireland. It is a rare and beautiful thing. Every free moment I have is being spent in sunshine. I am building up vitamin D stores and the pale is going off me too 🙂

After work today I headed to a grassy sunny spot. It was over 25C (about 80F) lovely, sunny a hint of a breeze. I decided to do my yoga routine. My neighbours prob. now think me a little odd…. well odd and flexible! It was great, I have never done yoga outdoors on soft thick grass before. I started with sun salutes, seemed appropriate, headed into Triangle and Warrior one and two. I did a more yin practice after that, open hip positions, Pigeon, Double pigeon, Swan, Mermaid, leg stretches, some back bends and shoulder stands. I ended with some core, Crow and Shavasana Feeling the grass and gripping the uneven surface of the earth with my toes really focused my attention. It was much more calming away from the distractions of my living room. The breeze reminded me to breath, the grass tickling my nose helped me relax. If you get the chance and have your vegan sunscreen I highly recommend it.

I took this image from etnayoga.blogspot.ie I am not familiar with her blog. I had a glance it seems nice, I must go back and have a proper look. I think this simple drawing is very effective.

sun salute

sun salute

I stayed out reading and warming my bones for another hour or so after. When I came back in I was ready for a refreshing anti-oxidant hit.

In honour of the good weather and the outdoors I made Green Grass Juice!

  • Six dark flat kale leaves and stalks (Cavolo Nero)
  • An inch an a half in diameter of wheatgrass
  • One unwaxed golden delicious apple
  • one little carrot
  • One unwaxed lemon
  • A 2mm (.10 of an inch) thick slice of organic ginger
  • Roughly the same amount of organic turmeric root
  • Three stalks inc. leaves of oregano
  • Five mint leaves
  • Optional: A dash of organic apple cider vinegar (one with the mother)
  • Optional: A double shot of water kefir- for the good bacteria and yeasts
  • Optional: A third of a teaspoon of magnesium powder*

*I put in magnesium as I worry about the oxalic acids in the kale, it will bind with the magnesium from what I have read.

This is enough to make two small juices or one big mug of a juice. My partner found it a little sour, prob. due to the giant lemon and apple cider vinegar. I like the sour and intense green taste. If you are new to green juices or wheatgrass, perhaps half the wheatgrass and add another apple. This juice is supports the bodies natural detoxification process. It is alkalising and energising. The ginger and turmeric are good for digestion and have anti-inflammatory compounds. It is packed with vitamin C , the B vitamins and vitamin K and the super lemony-ness was really refreshing after all my time in the sun! It tastes summery.

Colours….

Colours….

Green juices have been all the rage for a while now. There are other lovely colours in our fruit and veg. I believe we should be eating and drinking as many different ones as possible! Therefor any colourful juice is great! Those colours indicate different antioxidants and nutrients all having their benefits. Not dissing the green! Green is fantabulous, chlorophyll rich, helps deliver oxygen, boosting energy. I always have a green goody in there like wheatgrass. Beetroot has vascular dilation effects and helps lower blood pressure. Great if you are about to do some exercise. The herbs I’ve added are good for your digestion and oregano leaf is a fantastic anti-microbial. With the a dash of water kefir it will do extra good things for your gut 🙂

Here is the uber juicy palette for my Colourful Juice

  • An bunch of wheatgrass an inch in diameter
  • Half a head of green oak leaf lettuce
  • A red beetroot
  • Two small carrots
  • A stalk of celery
  • A half cup of celery leaves
  • One green pear
  • Half a small cucumber- 3inch/9cm piece
  • A slice of ginger
  • A quarter inch / 5mm piece of turmeric
  • Three mint leaves
  • Three oregano leaves
  • Three sprigs of curly parsley
  • Optional: A double shot glass of water kefir.

A typical Irish day, warm and sunny with a light breeze to start. It got a bit dull, still and humid, has completely clouded over and is now lashing rain. It’s irregularity is dependable. Not as dependable as my daily juice routine! Was that a segway? Did a clumsily commit segway-ness?

Veg-tastic Juice pre juicing

Veg-tastic Juice pre juicing

We have beautiful fresh organic herbs in the health shop I work in. So delighted to be able to add these nutrient packed refreshing goodies to my juice.  All the ingredients I use are organic. I know that not everyone has easy access to organic foods, but I would esp. try to get organic ginger as it can have been irradiated otherwise.

Veg-extravaganza Juice!

  • A an inch in diameter bunch of wheatgrass
  • A GIANT pak choi leaf/ two average ones
  • Five catalogna leaves
  • A three inch piece of cucumber
  • Half a purple kohl rabi
  • Four small red cabbage leaves
  • A stalk of celery
  • One medium unwaxed green apple
  • A couple of dessertspoons of peas! ( I had some defrosted organic marrowfat so threw them in!)
  • Half an unwaxed lemon
  • Five sprigs and stems of parsley
  • A sprig of mint (had about 6 leaves on it)
  • A slice of turmeric root (1/4 inch)
  • A slice of ginger ( about the same )

Packed full of nutrients, antioxidants and flavour. The lemon parsley and mint prevent the bitter green leaves from being over powering. The mint particularly lifts the flavour. You could use rocket instead of the catalogna leaves. You could have oak leaf lettuce instead of pak choi. Lime would be lovely instead lemon! Play around make your know Veg-tastic version!

Intense Juice

Still having my juice a day, for that extra nutrient blast! Wanted to go for bitters and fabulous organic stuff that is good for the digestion.

I have been juicing for a while and I have built up the intensity of greens I can take. If you have just pulled your new juicer out of the box do not start with this one! Have a look at my other lighter recipes and certainly do not juice garlic. I would even recommend diluting this with some water kefir or natural mineral water if it is your first green veg juice. Also sip the juice, take your time enjoy.

Intensity of colour, intensity of flavour, intensity of nutrients!

Intensity of colour, intensity of flavour, intensity of nutrients!

Intense Juice packed with flavour!

  • Two large pak choi leaves
  • Four or five kale leaves and stalks
  • Four catalogna leaves
  • Three red cabbage leaves
  • Half a pointed red pepper
  • Two stalks of celery
  • One green apple
  • A nub of turmeric (as thick as tip of your baby finger)
  • Half a lemon
  • A slice of ginger ( half cm thick)
  • Optional: one small clove of garlic
  • Optional: A dash of water kefir

As I said this is Intense! If you think your palette or your system is not ready for it yet you can A: reduce the green leaves by half  B: Dilute the juice. C: Come back to it another time 🙂

The catalogna are bitter green leaves, “bitters” stimulate the digestion. All the greens are filled with energising chlorophyll. The cabbage’s red colouring is an antioxidant. Along with the greens it is a massive source of vitamin K. This juice gives an intense hit of B vitamins, vitamin C, glutamine, potassium, the enzyme superoxide dismutase with a massive etc. The addition of the lemon, turmeric, ginger and garlic gives it anti-inflammatory,antibacterial and extra anti-oxidant properties. It also does taste lovely!

P.S. Even the pulp is amazing looking!
