Any one who follows me on twitter will know how passionate I have felt over the Irish Marriage Equality Referendum. Voting was yesterday. When I was a young teenager in Ireland it was illegal to be gay, it was only 1993 when it was de-criminalised. I remember friends having such a hard time coming out in small town Ireland. I am very proud that my country is the first to pass marriage equality by popular vote 🙂 a huge turn out with over 60% saying YES!!

This is my Green, White & Gold Celebration Juice! (well orange as it is a carrot!) – just incase those are the colours of the Irish flag! Though most will be celebrating with a fermented drink, perhaps this would be good for the nation’s party hangover tomorrow!! 😉

Green white and gold (orange) ingredients

Green white and gold (orange) ingredients

Celebration Juice!

  • A two inch in diameter bundle of wheatgrass
  • A ripe unwaxed green pear
  • A medium carrot
  • One stalk of celery
  • A few mint leaves
  • A few oregano leaves
  • Optional: Double shot of water kefir.
  • A few lettuce leaves- which did not wish to be photographed

You will have to have a masticating juicer for the wheatgrass, but you can always juice the rest and add a spoon of your favourite green superfood powder to enhance it!

Makes two small juices - so you can share with your significant other!!

My little hand held emersion blender died 😦 It is an ex-blender. I have a jug one now. The other evening after work, having drunk little water and feeling the lack of veggies, I made this. I upped the nutrient factor with green food powder. For good live bacteria, good yeasts and enzymes I popped in some homemade water kefir.

Raw Electrolyte Smoothies

  • A full mug and a half of organic coconut water
  • A double shot of water kefir – you could use kombucha if you like
  • A tablespoon of chia seeds (for the good fats)
  • A thin inch long slice of organic ginger
  • Two stalks of celery
  • One small carrot
  • A teaspoon of a green superfood powder of your choice
  • One kiwi
  • Optional: A spoon of natural peanut butter or almond butter

Peel the kiwi and chop the carrot and celery. Put your water kefir and coconut water in the jug first and add in everything else and blend. The ginger gives it a nice lift.

Filled me up too and stopped me just eating spoon after spoon of natural peanut butter while I cooked dinner! xs Aissa

Colours….

Colours….

Green juices have been all the rage for a while now. There are other lovely colours in our fruit and veg. I believe we should be eating and drinking as many different ones as possible! Therefor any colourful juice is great! Those colours indicate different antioxidants and nutrients all having their benefits. Not dissing the green! Green is fantabulous, chlorophyll rich, helps deliver oxygen, boosting energy. I always have a green goody in there like wheatgrass. Beetroot has vascular dilation effects and helps lower blood pressure. Great if you are about to do some exercise. The herbs I’ve added are good for your digestion and oregano leaf is a fantastic anti-microbial. With the a dash of water kefir it will do extra good things for your gut 🙂

Here is the uber juicy palette for my Colourful Juice

  • An bunch of wheatgrass an inch in diameter
  • Half a head of green oak leaf lettuce
  • A red beetroot
  • Two small carrots
  • A stalk of celery
  • A half cup of celery leaves
  • One green pear
  • Half a small cucumber- 3inch/9cm piece
  • A slice of ginger
  • A quarter inch / 5mm piece of turmeric
  • Three mint leaves
  • Three oregano leaves
  • Three sprigs of curly parsley
  • Optional: A double shot glass of water kefir.

About a month ago I posted my Sauerkraut recipe. Any one join me at the time? Here is what mine looks like now. The water is nice and clear. No floating scumminess. Nothing on the glass above the water line. This is a sign all is well. It has a good strong vinegary smell too. Fermented foods are sadly missing from many of our diets, and they are so good for us!

The backlighting is flattering!

I also keep Water Kefir and Kombucha. The water kefir is very active in the current warm weather. I changed mine last night. I thought it would be nice to add extra flavour. The orange colour comes from the rapadura sugar I feed it, i always put in a little ginger too. After straining it I added organic parsley and mint. It is a lovely drink for these warm long evenings. Filled with billions of good live bacteria and yeasts, fantastic for keeping your gut happy and healthy. I hope the summer will continue in this form and in another month I will be sitting in the sun having my sauerkraut with a big organic salad! 🙂

It's ALIVEEEEEEEEE!

Water Kefir is alive and growing! Doubled since my last post. Just giving it a large dessertspoon of raw whole cane sugar- rapadura/ turbinado, a dessertspoonful of organic golden caster sugar and a couple of slices of organic ginger. Takes about two and a half days to ferment. Billions of live bacteria!
